How do you wear Thai fisherman's pants / trousers?

This probably sounds really stupid, but I have just bought a pair and I'm not sure if I am tying them around my waist properly. It has straps, but it doesn't gather at the top when I pull them, so they aren't fitting right. Please help! :)
